How to measure for custom cosmetic and soap boxes
The right size keeps products secure and looking polished. Too big and bottles rattle and soap edges crumble; too small and caps get crushed. Here's how to measure.
Bottles, jars and tubes
- Measure the widest point of the container, including the cap, pump or dropper.
- Record length, width and height. For round bottles, length and width equal the diameter.
- Add about 1/16 to 1/8 in clearance per side; more for glass or irregular shapes.
- Add the thickness of any insert, leaflet or neck card.
Soap bars
Measure the bar after curing, as bars shrink slightly. Note the length, width and thickness at the thickest point. Add a little clearance, or make sleeves and bands snug so the bar doesn't slide out. For wraps, measure around the bar and add overlap for the seam.
Palettes, compacts and flat items
Measure the closed palette or compact, including hinges and clasps, and add space for a sleeve or insert.
Inside vs outside dimensions
We quote by inside dimensions. Board thickness adds a little to the outside, which matters if the box must fit a shelf, display or shipping mailer.
Common mistakes
- Measuring a bottle without its pump or cap.
- Measuring soap before it has cured.
- Forgetting insert thickness.
- Mixing inches and millimeters.
- Skipping a sample for glass bottles.
